The Market Specialists are focal to Bord Bia’s global activities. They connect Irish food and drink suppliers to potential customers in their specific region, while also building the overall reputation of the Irish supply base internationally. It is an amazing opportunity to build on your existing trade network in conjunction with leading Irish manufacturers to develop numerous exciting prospects.


Bord Bia will give you responsibility for a specific brief in your geography whilst providing stellar mentors, competency development and resources to support you. Our aim is to successfully increase listings in existing markets while also opening new markets for Irish manufacturers looking to diversify their export markets. The combination of your local trade network and your experience in consumer insights and category management will be central to this, helping Irish suppliers to develop their market entry strategy and localise their product range. Our ambitions are high for our Market Specialists and our export growth.

Job Title:                 Market Specialist, North America


Reporting to:           Manager, North America

Job Purpose: To support and contribute to the development and execution of Bord Bia’s Route to Market services, to deliver sustainable business lead conversions for Irish food and drink exporters in the sectors of strategic priority in North America & Canada.

Key Accountabilities

  1. To contribute to the development of Bord Bia’s annual strategy implementation plan in North America.
  2. To assist the development and execution of the organizations suite of Route to Market client services, developing client market knowledge and supporting commercial success.
  3. To proactively build a network of key trade contacts in priority sectors and channels to increase awareness of Ireland’s sustainable food and drink supply base and build industry reputation in target accounts.
  4. To localize and implement effective communication tools in line with Bord Bia’s corporate marketing strategy and ensure optimum reach for Bord Bia’s trade messaging, specifically industry capabilities and unique sustainability credentials by raising awareness of Origin Green.
  5. To develop market insights expertise, collating and disseminating relevant and timely market and sector information, to both client companies and colleagues in line with the best practice set out by The Thinking House.
  6. Purposefully contribute to the success of the Bord Bia Educational Talent Academy by actively mentoring & coaching students in market to deliver on their remit to further our client’s business abroad.

Main Duties

  1. Contribute to the development of Irish food and drink client companies’ local commercial marketing strategies in partnership with the sectors and insights teams.
  2. Proactively identify, meet and establish relationships with existing US & Canada customers for Irish food and drink products in priority sectors as well as seeking to grow the office’s network of key trade influencers (including media), channel partners and decision makers.
  3. Develop and share best practice procedures in key account management localisation to help our client base build sustainable commercial relations with their North American key accounts. Organise one-to-one mentoring sessions and wider industry networking events, including presence at local trade fairs and inward buyer visits.
  4. Become an expert in US & Canada market insights in priority channels and sectors by attending local industry conference, reading and analysing local industry trade journals, research and reports; and disseminating this information in line with the Thinking House best practice to grow categories exponentially in partnership with the Irish food and drink industry.
  5. Actively seek to expand and develop Irish food and drink exporters’ market knowledge and capacity to strategically exploit potential commercial opportunities in North America by organising regular market study visits to the region.
  6. Play an active role in development and selection of client assignments or customer placements appropriate for Bord Bia Fellowship programme, Origin Green Ambassador Programme and Retail Supply Chain programme for United States and Canada. Managing and coaching of programme participants and host or sponsor companies and partnering with the Talent Development Manager to advocate our Talent Academy. 
  7. Develop a panel of local trade experts who can act as business accelerators and mentors to support the US office on specific Route to Market projects.
  8. Seek out speaking opportunities for Bord Bia to present Origin Green and position Ireland’s unique sustainability credentials at key industry seminars and forums in United States and Canada. Actively engage and participate in sustainability debates with key opinion leaders in the market.
  9. Provide input into various internal and departmental reporting mechanisms: Monthly activity reports, market profiles and annual reports. Draft annual plans for the region and budget accordingly.
  10. Propose and implement multiannual plans in line with job description, strategic objectives, market growth priorities and allocated resources.


                                               PERSON SPECIFICATION


  • Degree level qualification in relevant discipline, e.g. Business, Marketing
  • Specialisation in international marketing an advantage
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies e.g. MII in Ireland; AMA or FMI in the US, or other appropriate equivalents, is advantageous


  • 5 + years’ experience operating in export marketing, sales or business development roles in North America or Ireland.
  • Experience building and distilling market insights
  • Successful implementation of high profile marketing events or projects
  • Knowledge of the Irish Food, Drink and Horticulture sector
  • Proven experience of building credible professional relationships with suppliers, trade customers, media, diplomats and politicians both in Ireland and North America.
  • Proven experience operating professionally in different cultures
  • Strong results driven KPI culture; budget management experience

Required Skills:

  • Second relevant language, French in this instance, highly advantageous
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with strong verbal and report writing ability
  • Highly tuned KPI driven influencing and negotiating skills adapted to the local culture
  • Proven organisational skills and practical application of project management tools and techniques.
  • Proficient business use of the full Microsoft suite, social and Word Press content management tools and Google Analytics and social media online monitoring tools.
