This is a hands-on role with involvement at every step of the recruitment cycle, from requisitions to on-boarding. This position involves travel, mostly locally. This will include some evenings and weekends.

Specific responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

Full life cycle of recruiting

  • Working with the Operations Managers in developing the requisitions (ensuring requisitions are complete and accurate)

  • Pro-actively developing a network of potential candidates and sources

  • Sourcing and interviewing candidates; reviewing resumes, credentials; verifying backgrounds

  • Ensuring qualified candidates complete the recruitment process, including coordinating road tests and orientations

  • Preparing and presenting offer letters, new hire packages

  • May also include participating in Orientations and post-hire follow-up

  • Developing marketing materials used for driver recruiting

  • May include working with driver agencies to find qualified drivers

  • May include company drivers and/or owner operators as required

Long Term Strategies: Developing and implementing initiatives that increase the driver pool

  • Promoting the position/industry and company to others (e.g. high schools, trade schools, immigration officials, both locally and globally)

  • Representation at industry events including career fairs

  • Developing a good understanding of, and relationship with, reputable driving schools

  • Working with other teams within Canada Cartage to develop programs to attract and train qualified drivers

Metrics: Measuring the success of recruiting initiatives

  • Accountable for measuring results and meeting objectives including: time-to-fill, quality candidates (road test success rate, quality of hire metric, turnover metrics)

  • Providing reports and updates to others as required

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of the competitive landscape including driver compensation, driver supply and driver demand

  • Works with the team on other initiatives that impact driver recruitment, retention and driver relations

  • May expand to recruitment of other positions such as mechanics, dock workers

  • May include entering new hires into systems (e.g. payroll, A1)

  • Providing assistance within the HR team as necessary

  • Other responsibilities as required

Skills and Experience Required

  • Preferred hands-on experience recruiting within the transportation industry, in a fast-paced environment where he/she is accountable for results (5+ years of experience)

  • Knowledge of industry trends

  • Must have a strong sense of urgency and accountability

  • Strong English communication skills, including writing

  • Good computer skills including MS Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Must be able to work well within a team, while at the same time be responsible for his/her own results and be able to be self-sufficient

  • Must be organized and professional

  • University degree or post-secondary education preferred
