Our client is a Michigan based 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to collecting, managing, and sharing data about the Great Lakes in affiliation with a partnership of Federal agencies with a mission to coordinate data on the oceans, coasts. They build and manage data sets vital to the health and safety of this invaluable natural resource. And, they need you.

So, to help speed things along, they’ve asked us to help them find a technical professional to manage their data services and IT infrastructure. In this critical role, the chosen candidate will report to the CIO and work closely with contracted vendors and staff. They’ll be responsible for overseeing software development projects covering data ingestion and related workflows, setting metadata requirements, and implementing other technical projects necessary to keep the Great Lakes data management and information ecosystem in peak condition.

THE WORK: While technical skills and experience are necessary, this is more than a developer position. The work will include management of the organization’s data environments, collaboration with in-house and external technical teams, developing work plans, and overseeing technical contracts.

LOCATION: This role is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and while we're hoping for candidates in the Great Lakes region we’ll consider strong candidates from elsewhere in the US and Canada. The job will require occasional travel throughout the region (including Canada) for visits to partner field sites.

MODE: This is a permanent, full-time role.

REQUIRED: Applicants must hold a degree in a quantitative field and have:

  • Experience in data management and engineering for analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning
  • Experience managing, maintaining and developing API endpoints and web services for inbound and outbound data
  • A strong grasp of data modeling, analysis, and visualization methodologies
  • Experience managing Cloud based data platforms (especially AWS)
  • Experience ensuring compliance with data governance and quality assurance standards
  • The ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences

DESIRED: In addition, it would be great if you had some background in:

  • Environmental modeling
  • Data infrastructure
  • Managing technical projects with public and private sector vendors and grantees
  • Experience managing work plans. 


COMPENSATION: This role is equivalent to GS11 on US Government pay scales and therefore pays in the low to mid $80s per year but comes with a very generous benefits package including strong health insurance and a 10% retirement plan match. This boosts the total value of the annual compensation package to well above $100,000.
