Engineers Without Borders USA builds a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs. Our highly skilled volunteers work with communities to find appropriate solutions for their infrastructure needs.
Now, EWB-USA is poised to scale our model and leverage our engineers for even greater impact in the field – through innovative new strategies for delivery that will bring increased efficiency and effectiveness. We have launched a three-year, $50million campaign to fuel our vision.
In order to succeed in this campaign, our team has been implementing a new model of fundraising – one that is focused on long-term relationships and engagement, rather than transactions. To further this ‘sales-based’ approach to fundraising, we are looking for another sales person to add to our team.
The Major Gifts Officer is primarily focused on sales – that is, getting out and talking to prospects and investors about the IMPACT of Engineers Without Borders, and generating results from those conversations. This is the farthest thing from a desk job! This person will HAVE to be out of the office as much as possible, meeting with prospects and presenting the opportunity to invest.
The ideal candidate:
Knows the power of engineering to change the world – this is someone who ‘gets’ how engineers think, plan, and act, whether because they’ve trained as an engineer (and know that’s not the right career path for them), or have worked with similar thinkers. This person has a passion to make a difference, whether through work, volunteer, or personal experience – and has seen how engineering can make a meaningful difference in solving problems.
Has sales experience, ideally a setting that includes team-selling, consultative sales, or business development (traditional fundraising experience is not necessary). This is a great storyteller, who engages authentically, is not afraid to make the ask – and knows that the best learning comes from failure.
Has an incredible level of persistence – he or she just keeps going at the goal, despite roadblocks and denials. This person has encountered plenty of rejection, and is constantly thinking about what new strategies to try out in their next approach, or how to gently plow through resistance.
Is a strategic thinker – rather than being too focused on the details, he or she concentrates on outlining the strategy and facilitating the most critical steps to effectively engage each prospect or opportunity, from initial preparation and phone call to the final follow-through. This person is methodical without letting process slow them down.
Is humble and coachable – this is a life-long learner, who has a few key mentors whose honest feedback he or she seeks out and implements. This person is often reflecting on how to do things even better, and takes on things outside their comfort zone, such as a graduate school class or a triathlon.
Enjoys navigating change – the ideal candidate is someone who thrives in a changing environment and manages it in a calm and strategic way. This person has been in high-growth organizations and enjoys helping them handle new levels of complexity and vision.
The Major Gifts Officer reports to the Public & Donor Relations Director, and will be responsible for securing funding, and owning a portfolio of prospects and investors. Key responsibilities include:
1. Owner of a sales portfolio:
a. Identify and prioritize high-level prospects
b. Own relationship management and strategy for all prospects and investors in portfolio:
* Prospect research and strategy
* Prospect predisposition planningProspect visit strategy and planning, including engaging other members of the team as needed
* Visiting with prospects and making asks
* Managing prospect follow-up activities, coordinating with the team as needed
* Collaborating with team members on engagement of existing investors
c. Meet or exceed annual fundraising goal.
2. Contributing member of the team:
a. Participate in team selling for funding opportunities as needed.
b. Participate in – and seek out – opportunities to learn about the projects and communities served by EWB, and the internal departments that make this work possible.
c. Build relationships with colleagues and leadership to identify projects in need of funding.
Location & Travel. This position is based in our Denver, Colorado headquarters, and will require frequent travel, largely within the U.S.
Compensation & Benefits. This is a full time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range for this position is competitive, between $70,000 and $80,000, depending on experience.
