Job Title: Lead Writer

The Lead Writer is an established senior medical writer who takes the editorial lead on key (high potential/high value) accounts, attending project briefing meetings, delivering high quality material, providing account area expertise and advice to the internal team and clients (commercial, therapy area and product-related) and contributing to strategic account development. With a focus on project management at an editorial level, the Lead Writer will effectively manage competing projects, and work with the resourcing team to ensure that their accounts are adequately resourced.

Depending on individual and situation: Line management and/or mentoring of new writers; support in credentials presentations and pitches.


  • Quality of delivery on projects managed-Ensure that all elements of a project are developed to meet client expectations
  • Project briefing meetings attended and brief team briefed clearly and accurately
  • Projects developed according to brief – to appropriate length and style, meeting marketing objectives/key messages clear and with correct use of English and scientific accuracy
  • Quality control checks (review and error read) performed on content developed by other editorial team members according to Company and client processes
  • Comments fed back to team members sensitively and constructively
  • Guidance and direction provided to less experienced writers
  • Lead client meetings, and liaise with client and external experts where appropriate
  • Projects progressed effectively and efficiently-Work with resourcing team to identify and implement adequate and appropriate resource; liaise with client and external experts
  • Projects developed within specified number of hours and delivered to agreed timelines
  • High project recovery achieved
  • Alignment of resource and project needs throughout project
  • Detailed briefings provided to editorial team members and freelancers, including number of hours allowed for each stage (outline, up to first draft etc.).
  •  Production and update of status reports (in collaboration with Account Manager [AM]/Event Manager [EM]) and sharing with external clients and experts where appropriate
  •  Proactive follow-up with clients to ensure that projects are progressed efficiently
  • Project and financial management-Work with account managers/events managers to achieve high recoveries on accounts
  •  Prepare detailed costings and written specifications or review costings prepared by AM/junior writers before they are sent to the client
  • Assess the amount of training time required at the beginning of each project and communicate to AM and writer
  • Monitor project recovery rates on a regular basis, taking necessary corrective action if project recovery is suffering
  • Highlight work outside agreed specification to AM and ensure that clients are made aware of additional costs in a timely fashion
  • Participate in project tracking meetings as necessary
  • Account development-Work with the AD/CSD/PM to develop proposals/pitches on account, and ensure that account develops to highest potential
  • Pro-actively identify account opportunities and recommendations proposed
  • For accounts with a current or potential business value ≥£50K, developed account plan using the Fishawack template with the AD/ CSD/PM
  • Regularly update Account plans (minimum, quarterly)

Education: 4 year post secondary education, or equivalent experience. Higher degree in the life sciences minimum; post-graduate qualification preferred

Experience: 3+ years’ med comms agency experience required

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to work to the allocated deadlines and specification is essential
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
