We are seeking a reliable, emotionally intelligent and people focused individual to provide support to men accessing the services of the Charles Street Men’s Shelter – an emergency shelter for males experiencing homelessness.


** This is a part-time, permanent position. Hours are day shifts, every other Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. **

Your key responsibilities include:

1.       Perform intake for those accessing the shelter

2.       Connect with and support the men accessing the shelter

3.       Ensure a safe environment for the men accessing the shelter and team members

4.       Assist with setting up meals and actively participating in meal time

5.       Help to maintain a clean shelter environment

6.       Perform Shelter team duties ensuring the best possible operation of the program

7.       All team members at House of Friendship are responsible for working in a healthy and safe manner

Your skills and experience include:

1.       Two year post-secondary education in a related field of study (i.e. social services, social work, addictions, mental health, community development etc.).

2.       Ability to relate and interact well with individuals including the men we serve and the people we work with

3.       Understanding of human interactions usually attained by life experience and/or by related education

4.       Strong interpersonal, emotional intelligence and resilience skills

5.       Ability to handle conflict and crisis situations effectively

6.       Ability to perform janitorial duties

7.       Ability to carry and operate cleaning equipment (eg. floor buffer, vacuum)

8.       Excellent oral and written communication skills

9.       Current Standard First Aid Certification, Non-Crisis Intervention training and Naloxone training (if not current will be required to obtain at hiring)

10.    Ability to work effectively with people with various abilities, life situations and cultural backgrounds

11.    Aptitude for accurate and efficient computer data entry

12.    Experience in a social service setting preferred

13.    Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
